detail at all our functions. Our members comment on the excellent and

Q. How long have you been in business?
Across the Room was founded in 1991 - that’s long enough to be firmly
established. We have an excellent track record - around 80% of new
agencies disappear within the first eighteen months.
Q. Will you be able to find me suitable introductions?
You will have opportunities to meet many of our carefully selected
members through singles social events or introductions. The more
restrictive you are in terms of the profile you seek, the fewer profiles
you will receive. So give yourself a chance to meet a variety - it makes
sense.
Q. How can you be sure that the members at Across the Room are
single?
We take steps to ensure that all the information given to us on the
application form is correct and of course we do send the programme to
their home address and contact them using their home and work telephone
numbers. If people are not willing to give this information then we
decline their application for membership of Across the Room.
Q. I have tried other dating agencies with little success, why
Across the Room?
You will not be just a name on a computer. We provide a personal
service, even at our singles events. Our excellent reputation and
advertising supplies us with hundreds of new members each month, so our
introductions will be plentiful and just for you.
Q. Is Across the Room a dating service or a marriage bureau?
Across the Room offers two levels of service. First we offer our
dating agency, personal dating introductions for
members who are primarily seeking long term stable relationships or
marriage and would like the personal service of a dating agency. The
second is the Singles Events for members
who primarily wish to boost their social life and make new friends. We are
not specifically a marriage bureau, however we have many successes of
which we are proud.
Q. Which membership is best for me?
If you are looking to meet that special someone then the
dating agency services of our dating agency are
best. There is no better way to immediately boost your social life with
splendid social events and to meet just the type of person you are looking
for than with our personal introduction service.
Q. What about confidentiality?
We do not divulge any confidential information without your permission.
Q. What happens after I have sent in my application form?
Both our dating agency and Singles Events members are sent a programme
of the forthcoming social events with booking slips for each one. They
return the slip with a cheque to Eleanor and come to the party! Members
may select and book forthcoming events through this web site.
Dating agency members are asked to make an appointment for their initial
interview so that their profile and the profile of the person they would
like to meet can be compiled. Once these profiles have been reviewed and
agreed, details of their prospective dates will then be sent to them.
Q. Why do I pay a membership fee?
This is a one-off lifetime social membership fee. The fee helps to
contribute towards the constant advertising campaigns in the national and
local press, which guarantees that at each Across the Room event you will
always have the opportunity of meeting new single people and making new
friends.
Q. Where do you advertise?
Across the Room advertises in the Saturday and Sunday Times, The
Telegraph and the quality local press as well as local radio.
Q. Do you interview prospective members?
Yes. Prospective dating agency members looking
for one to one dates are personally interviewed, whilst prospective
Singles Events members may visit our
offices if they wish.
Q. How many current members do you have?
Across the Room has over forteen thousand members, of which more than
ften thousand are active. Members are spread across Essex, Kent,
Cambridge, Hertfordshire, Suffolk, Norfolk and London. We currently
recruit over 150 new members each month!
Q. Do you have a high success rate?
Across the Room has been successfully matching members for almost 15
years. We have had numerous weddings and countless happy couples living in
a long term, stable relationship.
Q. Can I telephone for advice?
Yes of course, that is part of our service. We are here to advise you
on all aspects of your membership of Across the Room whether you are a
dating agency or Singles Events member.

Q. This is totally new to me. I feel quite nervous; do others feel
like this?
Yes, many people are just as nervous as yourself at the outset, but
soon realise that everyone is in the same situation and butterflies soon
disappear when you find yourself in such charming and friendly company.
Q. Who can I expect to meet at your singles parties?
You may wish to meet people with similar attitudes and interests to
yourself, although we do often find that opposites attract! Membership is
by invitation only to promote compatibility - that you will like us and we
will like you.
Q. Do you cater for vegetarians?
At all Across the Room dinner parties there is a vegetarian option.
Members are asked to indicate on their booking slip if they want a
vegetarian meal and to ring the restaurant direct to ensure that the food
is compatible with their dietary requirements.
Q. What happens if at a dinner party I do not get on with the person
who is sitting next to me?
At all Across the Room dinner parties and dinner dances the gentlemen,
or sometimes ladies, are asked to move onto a new table after each course,
so you will not be seated by the same person throughout the evening.
Q. What is the cost of the events?
If you are used to socialising, you will know
that any quality restaurant or hotel will charge £25.00 to £30.00 per
person for a 3 course meal. At Across the Room we take pride in our
venues, a typical Dinner & Dance including both wine and entertainment
will cost an average of £35.00. Our Club Nights are a great way to get out
for £14 - £20. Our Parties Nights cost around £16.00 and our London Sunday
lunches about £30.00.
Q. Do I have to attend a minimum number of Singles Events?
No, you receive a programme of forthcoming events each quarter and you
may choose whichever events you wish to attend.
Q. Are there any smoking restrictions at Singles Events?
Across the Room asks members not to smoke at Reception times or at the table during the
dinner. After dinner we ask that members abide by the smoking rules of the
hotel or restaurant in which the event is being held.
Q. What are the ratios at each social event?
We ensure as far as possible that men and women are evenly balanced in
numbers.
Q. How often do you hold your singles social events?
We have at least two events each weekend and at least one a party night
a month. We generally book a whole restaurant, hotel suite or country club
for the evening. There are always new members present.
Q. Will there be singles social events in my area?
We hold events in the major towns of Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent and
Suffolk. In the summer our country hotel events are very popular. The wide
range of events are designed to give members the opportunity to attend
events both locally and if they wish to travel and meet members from other
areas. So whichever area you live in, each month there will be events in
your area.
Q. How many members attend the events?
The number of members attending an event is limited according to the
type of event being held. At our disco parties we usually cater for 200 to
250 members; dinner dances are attended by 100 to 150 members; London
sunday lunches at the Ritz and Savoy are limited to 20 members.
Q. At my first party, will I walk into a room full of strangers?
No! Eleanor and her welcoming committee will be there to meet you on
arrival and introduce you to other members. You will soon feel at ease and
ready to enjoy yourself. Don’t worry, Eleanor is there with a safety net
to catch you!
Q. What am I expected to wear?
All our dinner dances are jacket and tie; parties are smart casual.
Every month we have a Back Tie Dinner and Dance, where gentlemen wear a
dinner jacket with bow tie and ladies long evening dresses.
Q. Do members come to events on their own?
Yes, the vast majority of members attend events on their own. However,
after their first event some ladies do link up and take turns to drive to
events together.
Q. Can I attend events in other counties?
Yes, we hold events across Essex, Suffolk, Herts, and Kent so that
everyone has local events. You may attend whichever events you wish.
Q. Will I lose my membership if I don’t attend for a while?
You have a lifetime membership of Across the Room. If your
circumstances change (e.g. dating or working overseas) and are not able to
attend events then please let us know so that we can put you on hold. Upon
your return please let us know and we shall send you the current
programme. There is no limit on the time that you can be on hold.

Q. What is the average age of Across the Room members?
Across the Room holds many different types of singles events to suit
all age groups, hence the average age of members attending does vary
accordingly. We have members with ages from twenty five to fifties.
Generally speaking we find that the Disco Party Nights and Black Tie Balls
are very attractive to our younger members.
Q. Are the members all professional?
We do try to ensure that they have either a professional background, or
otherwise make a useful contribution to society in their own special way.
But primarily our members are successful in their own field and enjoy
socialising in good company.

Q. Who can I expect to meet with the dating agency introductions?
You will meet people with profiles similar to those that you have
requested. All of these members are known personally to Eleanor or have
been vetted by a representative of Across the Room, and are people we
think will be compatible with you based on our meeting.
Q. Will I meet the same members at the singles events and the dating
agency introductions?
With the large membership of Across the Room spread over Essex,
Hertfordshire, Kent and Suffolk it is unlikely that all prospective
introductions would be met at the purely social events. Indeed, we do find
that the majority of our dating agency members prefer the individual dates
rather than attending the Social Scene.
Q. Will the dating agency introductions be in my area?
Our dating agency membership is drawn from Essex, Hertfordshire, Kent,
Cambridge and Suffolk so it is likely that prospective introductions will
be local to you.
Q. What happens if I am unhappy with the initial introductions?
We will review with you your profile and the profile of the person you
are seeking in order to ensure that future introductions will be more
suited to yourself. It sometimes helps to clarify one’s hopes and
expectations during this review.
Q. I find the concept of personal introductions exciting, but am
concerned about my safety.
Members of Across the Room are either known personally to Eleanor or
have been vetted by a representative of Across the Room. All members home
addresses and telephone numbers are recorded and a note is kept of all
introductions offered to members. It is safer to meet approved members of
a club rather than to meet strangers who have placed advertisements in the
local or national press.
Q. I am interested in a stable long-term relationship, I am
not interested in one night stands, will your dating agency introductions
be right for me?
Absolutely right for you, as people who make the commitment and take
the time to meet other members are seriously looking for a stable
relationship.
